In order to have an effective asbestos management programme, it is necessary to establish clears lines of responsibility for the programme’s management and implementation. To this end, a survey of the premises must be undertaken to locate and assess Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM’s).
An asbestos survey has three main elements:
- Firstly, it must, as far as is reasonably practicable, locate and record the location, extent and product type of any known or presumed ACM’s.
- Secondly, it must inspect and record information on the accessibility, condition and surface treatment of any known or presumed ACM’s.
- Thirdly, it should determine and record the asbestos type, either by collecting representative samples of suspect materials for laboratory identification, or by making a presumption based on the product type and its appearance.
